concrete jungle where dreams are made of!

Although I thoroughly enjoy all the prettiness and delicate floral touches that go hand in hand with many of the weddings I am working on at the moment, as a designer, it makes my design week so much fun when I meet a bride and groom who are looking for something with a little bite!

Cue Kelly and Mark who having met me at the Red Lion's Wedding Fair organised a complimentary consultation to design a bespoke invitation.  Over a coffee at Casa Hotel, Kelly and Mark made it clear that they wanted a sleek, modern invite using a black and grey pallet with hints of purple.  Kelly admitted to soft spot for sparkly things, but they were both clear that they wanted something unusual and edgy... but just didn't know what.

After going round and round the houses regarding their jobs, interests and hobbies I finally asked the question that lead us to their theme.  Where are  you going on honeymoon?  The pair literally lit up as they reminisced about their time spent in the Big Apple, so I skipped off happy as Larry (as you do) to sharpen my pencil, poise my mouse and get in the patriotic spirit!

Kelly and Mark are still deciding on aspects of the design from all the options I have sent them, but I am sure their guests are going to love the end result and thoroughly enjoy all the quirky little touches we are putting together to make them 'feel a part of it.... in old New York!!!'

If you would like to set me a challenge of designing something new and exciting, please get in touch via email or complete my Bespoke Stationery Questionnaire on the main website.

so... what is a venue plan?

I don't wish to gloat, but I can't help loving my job!!

Ok, Ok, not all the time... I admit it can get tedious when I have six hours of guillotining and folding ahead of me, but the Sky Plus Box and a cheeky glass of Pinot will usually work wonders and the evening hours pass by quite happily.  (I know lots of working Mums who are not as fortunate as I!)

However; one of my favourite jobs has to be preparing a venue plan.  I have offered this service for several years now, as not only does it give me a platform upon which to set the tone for the wedding, but it gives my clients a box full of inspiration which is really personal to their day, as well as various sketches so they can actually visualise how things are going to work at the venue.

Angie got in touch with me earlier this year to share with me her plans for her Australian Wedding.  Engaged to Jonathon with two beautiful daughters, they are flying out to Perth, Western Australia to tie the knot at the Aravina Estate this Christmas.  What started as a bespoke stationery design soon turned into some help with supplier sourcing and has now evolved into the production of a venue plan.  I keep waiting for the call saying I can fly out to help on the day!! (Still waiting Angie....)

Angie and Jonathon have never met me face to face, but through lots of phone calls, emails, Tweets and goodies in the post, I have been able to help Angie get everything in place so she can land in Oz and relax knowing everything is in hand.  And just as importantly, when she walks down the aisle, everything will look as she imagined.

Here are a few snippets from Angie's venue plan and bespoke stationery to give you a flavour of her upcoming day.

From top to bottom...

>>A sketch of the top table :: Showing a vintage mix of fresh flowers in a jugs and vases, with hessian chair back wraps and luggage label place names attached. Paper flowers will hang from the room beams to soften the large reception room at the estate and help frame the stunning views.

>>Flight Information holders :: Ideal to keep all your guests tickets together and remind them of any important details and numbers.
bespoke Stationery Item embellished with glitter and all neat and tidy bow :: £2.75

>>Confetti Order of the Day :: If you're going to take it all the way to Oz, then make sure your stationery is multi functional!  These cute confetti boxes double up as an order of the day using an embellished luggage label.
All neat & tidy favour box :: £1.60
Luggage label :: from £1.25

>>Well... the venue is a vineyard! :: Little bundles of tasting notes as the couple are having wine tasting after the ceremony and larger luggage labels to hang from welcome bottles of wine to refresh the weary travellers on arrival in Oz!
Luggage label :: from £1.25

Well, I had better be off, I have a New York design that needs tinkering with and a pair of fabulous purple shoes to source.

Have a good day wedding peeps.

With love, Hannah

frighteningly good ideas...

Can you believe it's October?  And not just October, over half way through! Well with pumpkins creeping into shop windows along with ghostly white faces I had a hankering for designing something with a subtle Halloween edge.  And what better place to show it off than the Wedding Fair with a Difference, hosted by the lovely Save the Date team at the Roundhouse in Derby.

Having looked at the exhibitor listing, I knew the day was going to be wall to wall with fabulous quality suppliers, with a heavy emphasis on vintage theaming perfect for a summer garden party.  But what about the brides who have seen one too many Lacy table cloths?  What about those girls who want more pizazz than pastel? My cunning plan was to hook them in with a Little Fish feast of monochrome splendidness, all embellished with a sprinkle of black glitter and a smidging of zesty orange detail.  And do you know what?  I think I may have pulled it off!

Taking inspiration from our seasonal colours and my 'Yes Ma'am' design, I focused on all things British to finish off a tip top wedding with a modern edge.  of course, there was more than a little fun thrown in for good measure!

From top to bottom...

>>Photo Booth :: These moustaches went down so well, nobody could resist having a go!  They make great accessories either on the table or with a photo booth.

Add ribbon :: plus 60p

>>Read All About It :: Personalised newspaper, featuring the story of how the bride and groom met and filled with chocolate fish and chips - serve them on the dance floor about 10pm as a scrumptious pick me up.

Printed and rolled ready to place :: £1.00 each.
Please add 25p for guest name personalisation.

>>Tag You're It :: Double layer invitations with mini RSVP tag attached to the front - really unusual and gorgeous with the black sparkly backing card!
Double Layer Invites :: From £2.25

>>Thing-a-mi-bobs :: Without a doubt, every one's favourite item was the... well the... thing-a-mi-bobs.  No I don't know what they are called either, you made them at school when you were bored and used your thumbs and fingers to open and close them as you counted - I recreated them as a bride & groom 'pub quiz' and personalised them so they doubled as a place name.
thing-a-mi-bobs provided as a PDf for you to print and fold :: £35
Printed and folded ready to place :: £1.50 each.
Please add 25p for guest name personalisation.

>>Favours :: Ooh, a cup of tea, complete with a mini quotation card and finished in a black favour box with an orange 'all neat and tidy' bow. How very proper!
Favour box with all neat & tidy bow and single diamante :: £1.60
Hand tied tea bag (from a fabulous collection from Northern Tea Merchants) with mini poem card :: £1.60

>>Flying the Flag :: With confetti making some of out venue a little hot around the collar, why not offer your guests these mini flags instead.  All the colour and festivities, less litter!
Flag with embellishment and bead to the top :: £2.35

A big thank you to Black Eyed Susan, of Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield for her gorgeous blooms which were just stunning.  To the lovely Lynsey of Bimbo Design for manning the stand with me and getting up ridiculously early on a Sunday morning, and to Darren Cresswell, Photographer extraordinaire for making us laugh so hard we got cramp in our cheeks!

I hope you all enjoyed the stand on Sunday and today's Blog has given you a little sprinkling of inspiration on this chilly October Wednesday.

win a pair of tickets to the wedding event with a difference

I can not believe it's only six days until The Wedding Event with a Difference. Where does the time go? Hosted by the lovely Abbi & Lydia at Save The Date Magazine (if by any chance you have been living in Siberia and haven't logged on, then do so... immediately!) this is without a doubt the region's premier show.  If you're looking for unusual ideas, quirky finishing touches and quality at every turn, then head to Pride Park this Sunday with a pair of flat shoes in preparation for being 'wowed'.

And just to give your Monday morning a little sparkle, I have in my possession a pair of tickets to give away.  Hooray!  All you have to do is send one teeny tiny email naming three suppliers exhibiting on Sunday.  And to give you a head start (just in case the sight of Gary Barlow in tweed on Saturday night has left your head a little woolly... ooh) Little Fish Events is one of them.

You'll need to be quick off the mark though as I will be drawing one lucky winner from the hat on Thursday at 10am, so make sure you get your entries into hannah@littlefishevents.co.uk in plenty of time.

Just to whet your appetite, here are a few little teasers of what to expect:

:: The chance to have a go at designing your own wedding stationery with me at the Little Fish Event stand - the winning idea will have the design made into fifty invitations by me - for free!

:: Over 60 stands of incredible exhibitors demonstrating what they’re all about.

:: The uber chic Creative Corner where you can meet a range of highly unique and creative companies who are sure to inspire you.

:: Feeling peckish?  Then rest your feet at ‘The Kitchen’ and enjoy delicious food courtesy of the fabulous Fiona Herbert Catering Company.

:: Next stop – The Lyrical Lounge. Within a stylish tipi tent outside, you can enjoy a drink at the Belvoir Fruit Farms stand before taking a seat and listening to some amazing music from a range of very talented musicians.

:: If you're bringing (dragging!?) your man with you then the ‘Blokes Corner’ is a must. Not only are there the necessities for your big day such as suit hire and stag do accessories but you can enjoy a sample of real ale courtesy of Nutbrook Brewery and test out your gambling skills at the casino table.

:: Last but not least, there's three opportunities to enjoy the catwalk show (and rest your feet) with a great range of incredible dresses by talented designers, all showcased from boutiques and shops within the East Midlands.

For more information and to register for tickets, visit http://www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk/ and I very much look forward to seeing you there where I will be showcasing not one but two of my new designs launched last month.

Have a super week.  Love, Hannah

stumped by a tree design... again

One of the things I love most about my job is the variety of designs I get to work with.  Yes I have an online brochure of invitation ideas, but very often couples come to me with a medley of ideas in their heads that they want to have specially created.  It's then up to me to rise to the challenge!

I have to admit, I am beginning to get a little fearful of drawing trees.  I am not a traditional artist you see.  In fact my GCSE art teacher told me quite clearly that I 'can not draw at all' and packed me off to the textile studio!  If a client wants a 'cartoon style' tree, then I am all over it, but for anything more realistic, it takes me much longer. I still have nighmares about Hayley & Mark's design, which took hours to get right.  However, after meeting with my new clients I knew that their love of the outdoors needed to be reflected in their wedding stationery.  I was prepared for a few more long nights.

The good news is, Kirsty and Hugh have taken several elements from several cards designed just for them and I can now get to work on their final design by mixing it all together.  I will pop a picture of the final product up soon, but here is an idea of what you receive after completing my bespoke stationery questionnaire.

Enjoy the sunshine, love, Hannah

who doesn't like pick n mix?

It was the middle of the week before I stopped buzzing from the weekend's wedding fair at the Red Lion.  There's somethig about meeting couples face to face and getting excited about their wedding day that puts me in a creative mood.

So, when the sun sported a large smiley hat on Wednesday I decided to grab the stationery I had created based on my Beautiful Bunting design and head outside with my camera.  I have always wanted the website to demonstrate how I can expand a design accross several items and I hope my newly revamped pick n mix page will do just that.

There are some shots on here that I just adore, it reminds me of summer parties, village fetes, the smell of candyfloss and hot dogs at the fair and freshly picked flowers from a rambling cottage garden.  It was a blissful way to spend a Wednesday afternoon in September and I hope you like the results!

Please click here to visit my new website and click here for the pick n mix page.

no lion about for hannah this weekend!

It's been an action packed week at Fishy HQ.  Not only did I work my socks off finishing my lovely new website with Lynsey at Bimbo Design, but I was also beaving away in the studio to create a table bursting with gorgeous little treats to tempt couples at the Red Lion's Wedding Fair on Sunday.

It's been a long time since I stood at a wedding fair, but the beautiful Red Lion which proudly stands at the edge of the Peak District National Park has been beautifully extended and refurbished.  So armed with my portfolio bursting with new designs, I was more than happy for my wedding goodies to have an outing to one of the area's most picturesque hotels.

I took along my beautiful bunting design and went to town making invites, table stationery, an array of favours, table plans, signage and quirky little finishing touches.  I have pictured here just a few items that were well received.  If you would like more detail, or indeed wish to place an order, please contact me.

Happy planning! Love, Hannah

Clockwise from top:

>> All set up rand eady to meet the couples

>> Old fashioned lemonade bottles with personalised single layer tags - simply pop them in alphabetical order and detail the table your guest is to sit at on the tag.  A great idea if you want something a little less traditional than a standing table plan! From £1.25 (excluding lemonade).

>> Bedtime hot chocolate in mini jars with ribbon, marshmallows and matching tag.  From £2.70 each. Why not put them on the pillows in the hotel as a thank you for staying at the venue?

>> Speech lollypops with cellophane, ribbon and tag - serve them with the coffee and stop Great Auntie Marge and Cousin Winnifred from nattering!  From £2.50 each.

>> Love is brewing with these gorgeous little bunting boxes, hand-tied luxuary teabag and mini card. These are incredibly fiddleyto make, so please don't order 100... my fingers may fall off!  From £3.20 as shown, or from £1.50 without the box.

Little Fish Events launches new site

I met with Lynsey just over a year ago and over a coffee and a slab of Victoria sponge, she uttered the words many people in business dread hearing.

‘I think your website needs a little facelift.’

I stared at my half empty mug and wondered if it were deep enough to drown myself in.  The website, or should I say 'THE WEBSITE'.  Over a hundred pages of images that take so many attempts to get right, text that takes hours to compose and links and coding that go on for weeks. Having been running the business while juggling my busy brood of three children, I had neither the energy or the inclination to set off on this monumental task.

Seeing the storm clouds gather, my little marketing Guru from Bimbo Design pushed on.

‘Nothing drastic, just an overhaul of the look, so it’s more three dimensional. And you know the stationery section is looking a little outdated!

I knew there was no stopping her. ‘It’ll take a day, two at the most’ she continued with an encouraging smile.

I had to admit there were some very shaky designs in the old on-line brochure, ‘Sparkly Dragonfly’ in particular was a quite horrific, I think I must have designed it with crayons in the dark. And there were the cards with the wire detailing and beads, which literally made my fingers blister whenever I had to make them. I guess we could give it a go… how much work could it possibly be?

Well, I can’t answer that question and I am sure Bimbo Design would rather forget the long days that turned into late nights and even crept into early mornings getting everything just so. I had a brilliant Facebook message last week that summed up the week for both if us…

‘Leave me alone, I am broken. I am dreaming about diamantes and glitter!’

Well after the countless cups of tea, sheets of card, tubes of glitter, reams of diamantes and pages of text, the new Little Fish Events site is up and running. I am particularly proud of the ‘designs’ section, which has taken me months to get right. There isn’t one card in there that I wouldn’t be very happy to receive through the post – certainly no ‘Spangly Dragonfly’ to haunt me.

I hope that through the new stationery, I can offer my brides and grooms the opportunity to present their guests with something that makes them feel special and spoilt and very privileged to be part of such a special day. I really think my stationery is chic, sophisticated and stylish, but with en edgy sense of fun. I hope this comes across.

As for all the other sections… well I guess you’ll just have to go and have a look for yourselves.

Finally, to Lynsey at Bimbo Design, who started this epic journey off with one innocent comment, thank you for your time, talent and patience. The best thing about this process has been working alongside you again. Now please have a day off and get some very well deserved sleep.

For everyone else… here’s the link. http://www.littlefishevents.co.uk/ enjoy!

Love, Hannah
